DVIDS – News – NPS Develops Custom Curriculum for Navy Cyber Warfare Engineer
The Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) has launched a brand new custom track in the existing Electronic Systems Engineering curriculum in response to an ever-changing and growing need in cyberspace and the growing community of Cyber Warfare Engineers (CWE) of the Navy.
The new curriculum was developed by the director of the NPS Center for Cyber Warfare and permanent military professor US Navy Cmdr. Chad Bollmann, with guidance from the CWE community and subject matter experts across the NPS campus. With plans to deploy in FY2022, the program will focus on cyberwarfare with the goal of educating the CWE community while providing the Navy and DOD with new opportunities to educate the future force in the vast cyber domain.
“The main objective of creating this track is to provide highly technical training in the area of cyber warfare and cyber operations to naval officers who have the mathematical and technical knowledge to study a rigorous engineering program specializing in the field of cyber warfare. cyberwarfare field, ”said Douglas Fouts, chairman of the NPS electrical and computer engineering department.
“By creating this new program, we have been able to provide a sample of all the best programs and specialties that support cyber warfare,” Bollmann added. “Cyber warfare itself is often difficult and frankly ill-defined, as there are so many different disciplines that are necessary for effective cyber warfare. “
The track will include three main areas (reverse engineering, networks and mobile wireless systems) as well as 13 areas of specialization allowing students to develop expertise within a specific contributory discipline within cyber.
“The uniqueness has to do with the rigorous foundation of computer science, electrical engineering and mathematics, as well as the ability to choose from one of the many cybernetic disciplines to develop their knowledge in the best way that meets the requirements. A student’s desires and the needs of the community, “Bollman noted.” In essence, NPS is going to be the primary source of CWE higher education. “
Bollman is quick to point out that NPS is one of the few universities, if not the only one, that could successfully develop a personalized, high-quality cyber curriculum with so many specialization options.
“There is no other university with this breadth of cyber excellence,” Bollman said. “In part, this is because we are unique in terms of mission, but also because of several other specialized and unique programs at the university.”
The core technical strengths of NPS in programs such as electrical and computer engineering, computer science, math, and information science form the foundation, Bollman said. In addition, NPS ‘ability to conduct applied and classified research and teach courses at classified and unclassified levels is important for the evolution of strong programs in cyber operations, software forensics, electronic warfare, and space systems. Finally, NPS is widely recognized in the Navy and DOD for its flagship operations research and electronic warfare programs, and has been designated by the National Security Agency as a Cyber Academic Center of Excellence for Defense, Operations and research for several years.
Put it all together, Bollman says, and “the bottom line is, there’s no other place that’s as strong in all things like this.”
The new track was developed with the help of CWE students who are currently enrolled in the Cyber Systems and Operations program at NPS. This opportunity and the experience of the students provides NPS and Bollman with the assurance that the track aligns with the exact needs and wants of the CWE community.
“The most important aspect of participating in the trial is providing feedback to help narrow down options,” said Luke Baden, US Navy student Lt. Luke Baden. “For example, highlighting difficult areas that we may need to focus more on, like finding vulnerabilities for example, or ensuring course progression for a track makes sense based on our expected track record at the arrival.”
With the program having received interim approval, Bollman said, the CWE community requests two master’s-level student housing and separate doctoral housing each year. each year in electrical and computer engineering, and computer science.
“Our community is currently experiencing significant growth and expansion,” Baden noted. “I believe the curriculum here will help continue to professionalize our community as our mission and footprint within the Navy expands.”
With the ever-evolving threat of cyber warfare looming, the NPS, Navy, and DOD must seek new ways to navigate this evolving battlefield.
“To be successful in cyber warfare, you have to be able to defend against old and new cyber threats, and also be able to take advantage of old and new cyber vulnerabilities of our adversaries,” Fouts noted. “Cyber warfare is going to play a huge role in any future conflict, and in fact, it has already played a huge role in recent conflicts. Therefore, if the Navy expects to win battles in the future, it must be. capable of winning in cyberspace, as well as over the sea, under the sea and in the air. ”
